Oakley Amphibian Boardshort Review
I purchased a pair of the Oakley Adventure Walkshorts a while back from www.steepandcheap.com. If you haven’t checked these guys out I highly recommend 10/10. They have a good assortment of all kinds of outdoors products ranging from hiking and camping, to flyfishing, surfing and everything in-between. After putting Oakley’s amphibian shorts through their paces I wanted to post a quick review. The way I understand it is amphibians are supposed to bridge the gap between boardshorts/swim trunks and every day shorts with maybe a splash of gym shorts mixed in. Overall I like Oakley’s version but not quite as much as the Quicksilver pair that I own. Below are more details.
Let’s start with the good. These shorts are great because they’re truly comfortable. The welded stitching looks cool and is also functional. The material actually repels water, the droplets bead up and roll off even after an entire summer of regular use. The shorts are lightweight which is key during hot summer days. There’s a small drainage whole in the crotch area (the size of a pencil eraser) which helps the water quickly flow out.
There are a few negatives that I found with these shorts. My main complaint with them is the cut. They are baggier than I would prefer, and hit mid-knee. My second issue is the back pocket has a zipper, and a high quality waterproof zipper, but the pocket itself is not water proof. Oakley must have been going for the look more than the actual function. The zipper can require more force than it should to open and close it.
I primarily wear these for golfing and as an every day summer short. I have worn them to the lake and the beach and can testify that they work well for that aside from the baggier cut.
If you can find these for under $30 I think it’s worth the price, but any more than that and you may want to pass. As always, I wear my helo compression shorts under my amphibian shorts to ensure maximum comfort and breathability. Check out the whole Oakley collection at http://www.oakley.com
