If you’re like me then you probably have at least a couple board shorts in your closet, and if you’re like some of my surfing and kiteboarding buddies then you have an entire drawer dedicated to them. If you don’t have a set of Hurley Phantom shorts then I’d highly recommend picking up a pair or two when they go on sale.
Hurley is definitely on top of their board short game. Because they are owned by Nike they have access to Nike’s massive R&D funding which shows in the fit, finish and performance of this swim trunk. The Phantom shorts launched in 2007, and have experienced constant innovation and performance enhancements ever since.
The main thing that you’ll notice is that these trunks leverage a four way stretch material (similar to Helo shorts). This material is incredibly comfortable and seamlessly moves with you. Think lightweight yet durable.
Another great feature on these board shorts is the waistband. The newest version of the Phantom shorts leverage what Nike calls a Hyperweave Waistband. They describe it as “Dynamically comfortable. Impossibly light. Hurley’s greatest innovation leap since Phantom, the Hyperweave waistband was comprised of a single woven layer taken directly off a loom as a complete piece. Free-floating magwires were placed throughout the waistband, reacting to movement for an adaptive fit when generating speed down the line. This revolutionary, single-layer construction replaced the traditional boardshort fly closure for 50% less bulk and maximum comfort when lying on a board.” Lots of marketing buzzwords in there, but essentially they reduced the fly closure by half to help increase comfort. I’ve never had an issue with a bulky fly, but I’m not a surfer.
Design: Nike hires top notch designers and artists to cater to every individual style you can think of, from traditional patterns and colors to very unique color schemes designed by acclaimed artists and athletes.
The last feature that I’ll hit on here is that Phantom shorts to dry out quickly which is a top priority for what I look for in a swim trunk. Part of this is because just like Helo shorts, Nike Phantom board shorts use recycled PET, using an average of 12 recycled plastic bottles per pair of Phantoms. Not only is it ecofriendly, but top notch performance.
They are also a player in the amphibian short market with their Phantom Boardwalk short. Basically a hybrid short that you can use as a board short but also an everyday around town short. These have belt loops and a button back pocket, lending to the everyday short functionality. I personally love hybrid shorts for any warm weather activity whether it’s boating, golfing or hanging out.
As the title states, I firmly believe that Hurley Phantom Board shorts are the best shorts money can buy.
