What Should I Wear Under my Boardshorts?

January 19, 2014

If you have ever had to ask yourself this question – you’re not alone. There are literally people all over the world asking “What should I wear under my boardshorts”. Which is hard to believe, but it’s true. There is at least one blog from every continent (Antarctica excluded) where dudes are talking about what they should wear under boardshorts.

There are definitely a lot of options out there, and I think I have probably tried them all at one point (along with everyone else plagued with this issue). I went the boxer route, but quickly found that they bunched up, and made me feel like I was wearing a diaper – not cool. Then I tried my standard boxer briefs. These were better than the boxers as far as bunching, but I discovered that they took forever to dry. In fact they didn’t dry until the next day. What’s the point of a quick drying boardshort if I was staying sopping wet under it? Next I resorted to the Under Armour and Nike Fit products, because they always worked well at moisture management for soccer and hockey. When I wear my boardshorts, I’m probably going to be in them (and what’s under them) for more than a few hours (unlike sports practice which only lasts 2-3 hours). After a while I found that the compression shorts under my boardshorts started to make my skin itch – especially after being wet for a long time. On top of that neither compression short really dried out fast.

So I was back to square one. I had two options, either wear an uncomfortable product, or go commando. I’m not a fan of commando because I like to have some support for my boys, as well as knowing I’m not flashing strangers on the beach. I didn’t like either of those options, so I set out to create a new product.

Creating a new product is one LARGE task. My company sampled literally hundreds of materials, testing durability, quality, and most importantly moisture management. We landed on using the material that’s now in Helo shorts - recycled PET. The two cool things about this material is that it’s made from recycled plastic bottles (very green and still incredibly soft and comfortable) and it works really, really, good. Now that we had the material, it was time to work on the fit. Under Armour and Nike had failed me in part due to the fact that they were too tight. We made sure that Helo shorts are close fitting, but not constricting. We also needed to make sure that there is good ventilation throughout the hot spots (aka the crotch area). That’s why there is a mesh insert that allows air to roll through the shorts while still eliminating the “flash”.

We think that Helo shorts are the best thing out there to wear under boardshorts. We are biased, but our customers are happy with the Helo shorts too – check out our Facebook and customer feedback sections. Customers are even using the shorts for non-watersports like soccer, hockey, lacrosse (check out professional lacrosse all-star Steven Brooks’ comment), and everything in-between. We ship sales across the country every single day. It is a great feeling to know that with each sale, we have made one person’s active day that much more comfortable.

Stop wearing an uncomfortable product and start wearing Helo shorts, a startup USA company with a made in the USA product. They’re perfect for all kinds of activities including:

  • Kayaking
  • Boating
  • Surfing
  • Kiteboarding
  • Wakeboarding
  • Tubing
  • Water skiing
  • Hiking
  • Camping
  • Swimming
  • Beach Days
  • Stand Up Paddleboarding
  • Wearing under a wetsuit
  • And much more!

The Nice Ride bikes just opened up for the season in my home city of Minneapolis. I bought an annual pass last year and was hooked! For those of you who don’t know, Nice Ride (https://www.niceridemn.org/) is a public bike rental system that enables users to check a bike out of a station, and then deposit it at any station wherever their destination may be.  The stations are strategically located throughout the city which makes them very convenient to use.
